Garth Fagan Wins Olivier Award 2000
Rochester's own Garth Fagan has won yet another award
for his ground-breaking choreography for Disney's
THE LION KING -the Society of London Theater's Laurence
Olivier Award, Britain's version of the Tonys. At
an awards luncheon at the Lyceum Theater, Mr. Fagan
was presented with the Best Theater Choreographer
trophy - a bust of Sir Laurence as Henry V.
Reached
after the ceremony, Mr. Fagan said, "I am absolutely
thrilled and delighted to be the recipient of the
Laurence Olivier Award 2000 for Best Theater Choreographer.
Not only is it a prestigious award, but it was one
of only two awards won by the London production of
THE LION KING out of eight nominations; my colleague
Julie Taymor won for Best Costume Design. I'm very
proud of the recognition and glory this award brings
to Rochester across the Atlantic, and am heartened
by the warm, enthusiastic reception provided me at
the ceremony."
The
awards ceremony was attended by international dignitaries
and luminaries of the London theater world, and was
televised in a BBC special on February 20.
