Arts & Cultural Council announces
appointment of Mary B. Buchan as a Councilmember of the
New York State Council on the Arts

Rochester resident Mary B. Buchan has been appointed by Governor George Pataki to serve a five-year term as a Councilmember of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Buchan is active in Rochester's arts community, and serves on the boards of Young Audiences of Rochester and Memorial Art Gallery. Buchan has also been active with the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester, serving on the Arts Council's Arts Awards Selection Committee in both 1997 and 2000.

The New York State Council on the Arts is a funding agency that provides key support for activities of nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in New York State and helps to bring artistic programs of high quality to the citizens of the state. The full Council reviews all recommendations for funding and has final approval authority.

Members of the NYSCA board represent all geographic regions of New York State and all arts disciplines. Buchan, who holds a Ph.D. in Art History, has a special interest in educational outreach programming in the arts for both children and adults.

Buchan and her husband Dennis has been Rochester residents since 1996. Previously, they lived in the Albany area, where she was Chairman of the Education and Collections Committees of the Albany Institute of History and Art. Ms. Buchan has also served as New York State Chair of the American Association of Museum Volunteers.
