ARTWORKS 2000 Summer Jobs Program
The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester (Arts Council) announces its Summer 2000 ArtWorks Program.
Eighty-one students will be paid minimum wage to work as Apprentice Artists for six weeks this summer. The ArtWorks program will take place between July 17 and August 25, Monday through Friday, at the School of the Arts in Rochester. Monroe County residents who are aged 14 and 15 are eligible to apply. Applicants must also have a 2.0 or better grade point average, a 90% or better attendance rate, and no long-term school suspensions.
The five work groups are:
African Dance, Drumming and Singing with Colleen Hendrick, Lead Artist and Eric Taylor, Assisting Artist. Love a good rhythm? Ever wonder where tap, hip-hop and swing dance came from? Learn the connection through African dances, songs and drumming. Make up your own dances. Get involved by making drums and costumes for the final performance where everyone dances, drums and sings.
Ceramic Tile Making with Nancy Vallee, Lead Artist and Rachel Smith, Assisting Artist. Where do all those tiles come from? What happens when you heat clay? Learn how to work with clay, make plaster molds, and use glazes to create your own ceramic tiles. Meet professional artists. Learn how to market and sell your work.
Drawing and Painting with Loree Harpole, Lead Artist and John Borrelli, Assisting Artist. Ever dream of being a famous artist? Begin by learning how to use charcoal, pencil, chalk and oil pastels to draw still lifes, graphic illustrations and cityscapes. Learn how to develop the artist's "eye" through elements of design, composition, and color. Show your art work at the final gallery show and invite your family and friends.
Theater with Almeta Whitis, Lead Artist and Kate Sparnecht, Assisting Artist. Ever wish you could be on stage or in a music video? Come together and have fun through storytelling, music and dance. Make masks to go with your stories. We'll make a video and invite friends and family for the final performance.
Poetry and Writing with Robert Ricks, Lead Artist and Karen vanMeenan, Assisting Artist. How do you make writing fun? Solve the mystery by writing poems and stories about things you do and the people you know. At the end, read your poems and act out your stories at a public performance that will be from the book you'll produce. To apply, students should call 428-6366 or stop in at the Zone Employment Office, 80 Commercial Street, Rochester, NY 14614.
Funding for the ArtWorks Program is provided by the City of Rochester, the Monroe County Workforce Investment Board, New York State Legislature, Gleason Foundation, John F. Wegman Fund of Rochester Area Community Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts and other individuals.
