Position Available:
Executive Director, Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester

The Executive Director is responsible for leadership and management of the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester, the local arts agency for the Rochester, New York region. The mission of the Arts Council is to promote, develop and strengthen the cultural industry for the benefit of the people of the Rochester region.

The 1995-2000 goals are: 1. Build collaborations between arts and community development. 2. Market to build new audiences for the cultural industry. 3. Create and support opportunities for artists to serve as valued resources to the culture and economy of the region. 4. Make the arts basic to education. 5. Strengthen the economic base of the cultural industry through new revenue development. 6. Change the public's image of the cultural industry.

The Executive Director reports to and works in partnership with the board of directors and is responsible for developing and managing the organization's annual budget of $800,000, and supervising a staff of 7 to 9 individuals. The salary is commensurate with experience, with a generous benefits package. The position is available in June 2000.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications.
Required:

  • Demonstrated leadership, communication and organizational skills that create vision and value for the organization and the communityBachelor's degree with five years management experience, or equivalent combination of experience and educationDemonstrated expertise in fundraising from public and private sourcesDemonstrated ability to work with a diverse range of peopleExperience in hiring and managing staffKnowledge of the arts and familiarity with broad arts issues and trendsDemonstrated ability to assess local attitudes and environment Familiar with the applications of technology to further agency goals
  • Demonstrated ability in written communications, public speaking, and group facilitation

Desired:
· Masters degree
· Working knowledge of nonprofit fiscal management and budgeting
· Experience in grantmaking, preferably in the arts
· Familiarity with the local arts agency field

Responsibilities of the Executive Director:

1. Planner: Working with the board of directors, the Executive Director facilitates a regular strategic planning process, developing a clear vision for the Arts Council, building an understanding about the mission, and implementing appropriate goals and strategies to advance the mission. He/she considers all community voices when making decisions.

2. Advocate: The Executive Director is a major community voice who articulates and communicates the community's cultural values and objectives. He/she develops effective working relationships with cultural organizations, artists, community leaders, government agencies, elected officials, and others.

3. Manager: The Executive Director develops programs and services that support the Arts Council's strategic plan. He/she hires and evaluates staff, and leads the staff in managing and administering programs and services. He/she has a realistic budget in place, monitors expenses, and ensures that the Arts Council's goals serve as the basis for financial planning and expenditures. The Executive Director serves as the chief communications and marketing officer of the organization.

4. Fundraiser: With the board and staff, the Executive Director develops and implements appropriate fund raising and financial strategies. The Executive Director is the chief fundraising officer of the organization.
